Funambol posted a press release stating that they have made the world's first Open Source Mobile Sync App for the T-Mobile G1 and Android OS. They say world's first because as you may know Apple has a Mobile Sync App for the Iphone. It's called MobileMe. But as you guessed it ain't free. Apple charges almost $100 a year, for the service, which allows you to sync your calendar, contacts, emails, and other .mac related programs to your iphone device.

The Funambol Android Client syncs contacts from a Google gPhone with a Funambol Server.

Funambol Android Client provides an open source Mobile'We' capability for gPhones to make it easy for users to sync and share contacts from other mobile phones as well as from popular desktop apps such as MS Outlook and webmail such as Yahoo!, Gmail and AOL. The software was developed by the Funambol community, which demonstrates the speed at which an open source development model can support the latest mobile handsets

"The Google Phone is a great example of how the mobile industry is embracing open source, but at the same time, it's also more open for Google than other software and services," said Fabrizio Capobianco, Funambol CEO. "Our Funambol Android Client adds a Mobile'We' capability to help gPhones realize their open source potential by enabling them to sync a wide range of content with virtually any source."

Nokia: "Apple and RIM make some hot phones!"

Nokia tips hat to Apple, RIM

    http://www.intomobile.com/2008/10/02/nokia-tips-hat-to-apple-rim.html

    Quote:

Nokia talked a bit about competitors today and was generally cool with throwing them a bone, while of course remaining confident in their own progress. For example, they respected RIM’s ability to work into the enterprise back-end while still claiming Nokia would overtake their numbers in the next couple of months thanks to a recent arrangement with Microsoft and Cisco. Similarly, Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said of Apple, “We have a new, credible competitor in this business. You know I need to take my hat off … Of course we need to be able to respond to any competitor and we will.” When it comes to a statement like that, you can’t help but take a look at the Tube and wonder if that’s supposed to be their answer to the iPhone.

In any case, that’s the classy way to talk about competition. When announcing their Q2 earnings, RIM rebuffed the idea that the iPhone posed any threat whatsoever, which some investors thought was ignorant and downright delusional. Despite decent growth numbers, RIM’s stock took a dive following the conference call, which was further compounded by the US stock market crash. It just goes to show that attitude towards competitors can say a lot about a company.

Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer confirms Zune on Windows Mobile

    http://www.intomobile.com/2008/10/02/mic....ows-mobile.html

    Quote:
While this isn’t the Zune phone that many have speculated is in the works in Microsoft’s R&D labs, it’s the next best thing. The media-playing (and presumably sharing) capabilities of the Zune music player have been confirmed to be coming to the Windows Mobile platform. Microsoft’s CEO Steve Ballmer confirmed that the Zune software that powers the Zune media player “will also be ported to and be more important not just with the hardware but on the PC, on Windows Mobile devices, etc.”

We can’t see how Ballmer could be any more clear about the Zune software hitting the Windows Mobile OS - presumably with Windows Mobile 7 in 2009 - to bring all that digital media-player functionality that Zune-fans have been calling for in a mobile phone.

Ballmer’s vision for Microsoft has the company bringing the functionality of its Zune media player to Windows Mobile smartphones around the world. Rather than concentrate on manufacturing smartphones to chase Apple’s iPhone for market share, Zune on Windows Mobile essentially allows Microsoft to build up with mobile brand with more feature-appeal.
