January 17 Call of Cuty 2 coming to Pocket PC
Call of Duty 2, one of the highest ranked World War II First Person
Shooters in recent history, is now being ported to the Windows Mobile
Pocket PC platform. ![]() Aspyr Media is handling the port of the game and just by judging on the screen shots, it looks good for Pocket PC standards. The controls of the game have been completely reworked to make full use of the touch screen interface on Pocket PCs. It will be interesting to see how well they pulled that off since previous first person shooters that I have tried on my Pocket PC have not been the best control wise(Pocket Wolf3D and PocketQuake come to mind). According to the developers the game is designed to take full advantage of next generation Marvell(who bought the XScale line from Intel) XScale (Monahans / PXA3xx) CPUs. Those CPUs can go up to 800MHz so I doubt that the game will have any problem running on those when they show up in devices, which will probably be some time this year. There are two versions of the game: software rendered and hardware accelerated. Beyond being compatible with Windows Mobile 2003 and Windows Mobile 5, each version has certain requirements. They are as follows:
While Aspyr has not said this out right, I believe the Hardware Accelerated version probably performs better and has better graphics. I would not be surprised if the screen shots they were showing were of a device with an Intel or nVidia GPU in it. I also wonder how much of the elements that made the PC version great made it to the Pocket PC version. The game is currently stated to be releasing sometime this month so keep an eye out for Call of Duty 2 Pocket PC Edition. Discuss this topic here on the Reaper PC/PDA Forum: Click Here November 09 Palm Gamers get the "EDGE"A new game was recently released for the Palm OS and it's getting great reviews all around the Palm gaming community. This game is called EDGE. It is a RPG from Zane Games and it looks to be one of the best RPGs ever released on any PDA platform. All of the reviews I've read so far seem to have little negatives to report on this game which is a good indication that it has done many things right in the eyes of PDA gamers. I have not had a chance to play the game myself because I do not own a Palm device and to play it on my Pocket PC would require a program like "StyleTap" which would allow my Pocket PC to run Palm OS programs. For complete reviews of the game you can check out Zane's site where he lists a bunch of reviews for the game. From what I can tell from the screen shots the game looks to be a Diablo/Diable II style game visually, which is a good thing considering the success of those two games. I just hope the developer of the game will make an actual Pocket PC port. After all, we could use some RPG goodness too. If any of you have a Palm device feel free to post your experience with this game here or as a full review on the game section of the forum. |
